I don't think it's fair - quite - to call structuralism a "fad." Structuralism is at its heart nothing more than the recognition that the signs in a system (e.g., words in a laguage, notes in a key) don't really mean anything except in the context of and in contrast to other signs in the "same" system. One could argue that this was so fundamental and obvious that it didn't deserve a name and movement of its own, except that it clearly wasn't; people to this day keep trying to locate meaning within the individual sign.
