It occurs to me that the conservative party in the United States also seems to apply these psychologically manipulative techniques - and probably their opposition as well.

Do things that probably shouldn't be done, with the express intent of enraging your opposition (and pleasing your own base) which results in far more attention than is warranted, free press, word of mouth and so on.

Many people in this country aren't politically engaged, but with the way the media and the government function in tandem these days, it does not seem a stretch of the imagination to conclude that these are fairly well thought out activities by the political elite to generate buzz. One would think that doing reprehensible things would have the opposite effect, but if it increases engagement in your own base - greater turnouts at the polls - is it not a success?
