I am a recovering libertarian, just as I am a recovering drug addict: It feels good, but it’s not sustainable. Tomorrow I’m going to vote for a number of lessers of two evils because we have to have a legitimized armed gang to deal with allocation problems, externalities, etc. I’m voting straight Democrat because, while all governments bugger the citizenry, liberals use lube.

Here are some people who still believe we can get away without having a State [Reason]. Maybe they’re right.

I do know some libertarians whose idea of the minimal necessary state is 1) national defense, 2) pollution taxes and other fixup of negative externalities.

But in general, it seems clear that most libertarianism comes from a certain attitude -- being more correct than other people -- more than philosophical principles. There are lots of ways to feel more correct, and libertarians can slip from one to the other more smoothly than might seem logical.
