I thought you meant they'd left out the whole incident, not just that one line from the letter.

By the way, they got the critic's name wrong. He was Paul Hume, not Douglas Hume. Maybe someone's mind accidentally came up with allusions to Alec Douglas-Home (pronounced Hume), British politician (and briefly prime minister) of a slightly later date.

I wouldn't call Andrew Jackson whacking his would-be assassin with his cane as a meltdown on Jackson's part. Come on, he was defending himself from an assassin. This incident more appropriately put Jackson on the list of the 5 Most Badass Presidents.
