I can relate.

Despite decades of being married to a huge reader, my father never could overcome the urge to think, "oh, look, that person's reading. They must be lonely..."

This is how I perfected my fake frozen social smile.

Dear Miss Manners (Judith Martin) advises the rudely-interrupted reader to blink at the interrupter and ask (in a bemused voice, as if just awakened from a deep sleep) "What?" Then when the interrupter repeats whatever they said, say "Oh" in a vague tone and resume reading. Repeat as necessary until the interrupter gets a clue and goes away.

People who "don't have time" to read, exercise, cook, volunteer, blah blah etcetera, generally spend most of their waking, non-working hours watching TV and Netflix, playing video games, hanging out on Facebook, fooling with their cell phones, and shopping for more junk they don't need.

Of course, in many cases, "I don't have time to read" is really a euphemism for "I can't read very well."
