Christmas confession
I am the musical equivalent of Tom Lehrer’s old mess sergeant, the one whose taste buds were shot off in the war. For instance, I love “MacArthur Park,” particularly the version by Waylon Jennings & the Kimberleys. And for this season I like “Little Drummer Boy.” Yes, I know that having someone play the drums to welcome a newborn baby is really dumb, but I like it anyway. I liked it by what I thought of as the Hairy Simian Chorale; I liked it when Johnny Cash, of all people, covered it; and I love the doo-wop version by the Tokens.

I like 'em both, too. (My taste is really weird.)

Thanks for the pointer to the Jennings MacArthur Park-- it's lovely.

My taste is pretty wide, and I've gotten comprehensively sick of people being hated for liking the wrong music.

Religious people get dinged for being anti-pleasure, but there's a tremendous amount of secular opposition to pleasure, too.

I also like "MacArthur Park," and had never heard that version before. I still like Donna Summer's version better, but (considering that I generally have no use for c&w singers) this is really good.

On the other hand, "Drummer Boy," which I originally did like, was permanently ruined for me by being an alto in grade school choir: the part typically given to basses is just boring, three minutes of going "rummm...rummm...rummmm rumrum rummm." I manage to like some versions anyway (like the one with Crosby and Bowie), but generally it drives me up the wall.

I've always liked both those songs too. Waylon Jenning's 'Macarthur Park' is nice, but I prefer the original version by Richard Harris. LOL, I love 'Jurassic Park' - you can always count on Weird Al to lighten the mood when things get too schmaltzy.

Newborn babies like drumming just fine! My daughter was 9 days old for her first Circle, at which there was plenty drumming; she danced the whole Spiral Dance (in a cozy front-pack) with one of her godfathers.

I like "Little Drummer Boy" although I like "Do You Hear What I Hear" even more.

I'd forgotten that one. Thanks for the reminder

I always loved Ed Ames' voice on that one.

One of the things I always liked about Little Drummer Boy was thatit DID seem like a gift that an infant might enjoy (unlike gold, frankincense, or myrrh). Of course the little drummer boy in the song would've been playing something gentle like a doumbeck, not the snare drums.
