Reading about the subprime scandal, I learned that Angelo Mozilo, the CEO of Countrywide Financial, is a dark-skinned Italian who was once refused service at a Southern restaurant because of his pigmentation. When he told them he was Italian, the reply was, “That’s what they all say.”

The confusion remains:

I did, back in the 50s. Seemed like everyone else considered it a wonderful story and I though it was "Blood will tell."

The problem is that it can be read that way. And that is a problem. But I don't think that was Twain's intention. What he was trying to say was that breeding doesn't tell. Which was worth pointing out. And he was also pointing out the absurdity of the system that classified people as White or Black regardless of the existence of mixed ancestry.
