Body autonomy
Against Mandatory Modesty

Meh. Apparently this mother was brought up by prudes - probably of the Christianist variety that thinks female bodies are Evil - and this is her reaction to that.

All very well, I suppose, but it's also kind of silly. She seems to assume that the prudery she experienced in youth is some kind of cultural norm, and it's really not. In a great many places in America - both city and country - girls go around all summer wearing nothing but short-shorts over a bikini. That's what I wore every summer, till I was 30 and moved to the chilly Northwest.

That said, it is NO service to young girls to refuse to teach them that there is a direct connection between how they dress and how they are perceived - especially by men. Wear short-shorts and a bikini on public transit, and one can expect to be ogled, hit on, very likely groped, and also glared at by prudes. Wear short-shorts over a bikini out alone in the city at night, and one can expect to be perceived as 'easy meat' by every creepy horndog who passes by - some of whom may try to get some of that.

Blah blah blah "rape culture" - this is Reality, nor are we out of it. As far as I'm aware, there has NEVER been a culture in which rape was not regarded as the woman's fault, so we might just as well call it "human culture". I didn't teach my daughter 'modesty' - we're a skyclad Pagan family; we have no modesty whatsoever - but I sure as hell DID teach her safety, and part of that was how not to present herself as a tempting target for scumbags.
