Haters gaming the search engines to tell us Jews, women, and Muslims are evil.

Thanx to Metafilter

... well that' horrifying.
What can ordinary people do against such reckless hate?

How about typing a few countering searches into Google every time you use it?

I typed "Muslims are good" and "Muslims are not terrorists" into my Google search box. Now every time I type "Muslims" I get those two suggestions, because Google is always trying to be helpful. Maybe if we all searched on those terms every day the algorithms would start picking it up more generally.

Yeah, it's alarming but alas it indeed isn't new. A decade ago I did an accidental Google-bomb (fan-fiction item went viral, and because part of the fiction was embedded into meta tags it dominated the search terms for a couple of months) and for a while earlier a fan page I ran outranked the official site. Pity it's still vulnerable... though I gather it takes a lot more effort to spoof/corrupt than in the old days.

-- Steve's seeing the consequences more clearly now, particularly with the funky election results searches and the weekend's PizzaGate detonation.
