You say that as if there were something wrong with it
The simple and obvious idea that consent marks the difference between acceptable and unacceptable sex horrifies Rush Limbaugh.

It horrifies many conservatives, from what I can see -- did you hear about this bit of malarkey?

Betsy McCaughey, advisor to Trump, says that Secretary Clinton cannot condemn Trump's gleeful recountings of sexual assault because Secretary Clinton listens to Beyonce, whose lyrics describe, among other things, consensual sex.

"if the left ever senses and smells that there’s no consent in part of the equation then here come the rape police. But consent is the magic key to the left.”

I try to exercise the principle that "Everything someone says makes sense to the person saying it," but I just can't even this one.

The other direction, the idea that some particular actions can't be made okay by consent, I can see what that is to someone. This direction, the idea that it's absurd to require consent *all* the time? That consent is a college-intellectual formalism? I don't get it.

I would guess it's probably closest to the "formalism" thing. I suspect it's that "everybody knows what rape rape is, where you physically force someone who is physically resisting, and as long as that's not what you're doing, consent is a nice frill to have sometimes maybe."
