I have a number of the usual internal personalities: the 5-year-old, the prosecutor, Mr. T (for Tourette). But I don’t know how many other people have an internal Quartermaster.

I have a powerful desire to buy Supplies: school supplies though I no longer go to school, office supplies though I don’t have an office, art supplies though I’m not an artist. I like to think I haven’t bought all that much more than I’ve needed, and I seem to be gaining that sort of Wisdom of Age that Heinlein told us mostly resembles weariness. Now there all those nifty-colored things that have something to do with phones…I will be strong.

I resemble this: only I disastrously levelled up to buying IT office supplies about 10-15 years ago during a period of freelance computer journalism ...

... Which is why I have three iPads.

I'm trying to throttle the habit, and the current hilarity involving the pound sterling is promising to help, but then I'm going to end up buying something else. I've been through multitool phases and headphone phases: it's a good thing I live in the UK or I'd have gone through a gun phase, and AR-15s with all the twiddly technical bits that bolt onto them are even more expensive and useless than computers. And I would totes end up with something like this:

Filmmaking is a brilliant excuse to buy Supplies of just about everything. It often comes in useful.

I go into craft stores and want to buy supplies for crafts I don't know how to do. I try to stay away from yarn stores/departments because I do know how to knit and it would be so easy to justify buying lots and lots of those pretty skeins of yarn.

One of the Goodreads Giveaways books I've won is a how-to book on painting watercolors. The last time I painted a watercolor was 1968 in high school. But I'll get back to it someday!

(I'll also learn to read and write music, play an instrument, speak a second language, etc., etc. I'll be a Renaissance Man by the time I get to my deathbed, or at least think about it.)

I just had a small triumph of a little supplies hoarding fetish.
The week of August first, Walgreens has back-to-school coupons including for 3x5 spiral notebooks (5/$) and little highlighter markers (6/$). I carry and use a disposable notebook for little notes. Paper and pen is often an Appropriate Technology, and when one is munged from too long in too many pockets, tossing the remainder is no loss. And a handful of little markers is fantastic if one abruptly needs Signage. (as at cons)
My High Holidays ushering assignment this year was checking out & in the loaner prayer books. I used my little markers, in 2 or 3 colors, a couple of times on paperwork and organizing.
I'm pleased.
