Uber Unter Alles
Further evidence that Uber was created to show how awful unregulated private enterprise is.

Thanx to browngirl

The first time I ever heard of uber, my immediate reaction was, "It's a scam. The numbers don't add up." It's distressing how few people can do elementary business arithmetic.

I don’t understand it either. Amazon got to where it is by losing money on every transaction and making up on volume. Milo buys eggs on Malta for 5c and sells them on Pianosa for 2c, and makes a profit at both ends.

I'm not sure how I understand the numbers not adding up. They match people who want rides with drivers and get a cut off the top of the transaction. That's a formula for a lot of money if they can get the drivers.

What should crush them is the economy - once people make enough working at steady jobs, Uber drivers should dry up. But that isn't likely to be happening in the near future.

Short answer: they're screwing the drivers. Insurance, maintenance, Social Security, wasted time, etc.

Yes, agreed. That's kinda where I'm going. The numbers wouldn't add up in a healthy society, but we don't have one - we have lots of people desperate enough to do this. Given that, they'll soak up a lot of money, especially with their new trick of leasing you a car so you can be an Uber driver. There's plenty of money in finding ways to indebt the poor and keep stringing them along with threats of lawsuits and garnishments.
