Why did Tiptree pretend to be a woman?*
R.A. MacAvoy encounters male-pattern invincible ignorance.

*I have heard this theory seriously proposed.

Thanx to File 770

Before I read Bertie's article I guessed that "Why did Tiptree pretend to be a woman?" would be a case of accusing Alice Sheldon the person of being some sort of fake transsexual. (She does look rather "mannish" in some photographs.) After reading the article I guessed it'd be the same thing as conveyed there: just confusion over the sex of the person who wrote the stories. As you say you've heard this seriously proposed, I wonder what form the accusation took.

Fanzine article saying the real Tiptree had Alice Sheldon take the rap so he would not be revealed. No purported evidence, if memory serves.

Back in the day, there was some Con in which a confused young fan got belligerent with Harlan Ellison for saying that Star Trek was fictional. Shades of Galaxy Quest, eh? Fen are all weird; some are just more obtrusive about it than others.

(The U.S.S. Enterprise has a library of old movies: Casablanca, The Day The Earth Stood Still, etc. So..... do they have Galaxy Quest? How about The Wrath of Khan?)

I had an... interesting... conversation with a coworker about Richard Castle, Nathan Fillion's writer/detective character on the CASTLE tv series:

"No, no, Richard Castle is a real person! He's actually a writer! You can find his novels in bookstores!"
