I had a dear friend in jail in Oklahoma for three months. It broke him badly, and it was five years before he recovered. During that three months, phone calls were the only thing that kept him even half-way sane. I _always_ accepted his calls. And they were ruinously expensive, with a serious connect fee, and then something on the order of fifty cents a minute, I think. I don't remember. It was incredibly abusive. Some of his friends he could not call, because they could not afford the charges. It was petty and brutal and I still resent it.

Unsurprising. And no doubt worse since the imbecilic idea of private-enterprise prisons.
