Every year I go to the International Conference on the Fantastic in the Arts, which welcomes people who openly support a belief system that gave us gulags, the Cultural Revolution, and a heroic effort to wipe out everyone with the privilege of literacy, all in a space of less than a century. And I’m in favor of that because First Amendment.

But that’s easy for me to say, because I know they’re not going to be able to enforce their ideas on me. Women, POC, and queers often don’t have that comfort in dealing with those who want to suppress them.

I hope people figure out a way to vigorously oppose both communism and bigotry.

Agreed. This post is one small effort in that direction.

Good luck. I've started to hammer on the idea that if it's reasonable to blame capitalist societies for poverty in them, then communist societies should be blamed for their greater level of poverty.

Have you run across the idea that China has an imperialist government? I've floated this, and people have reacted as though it's a shockingly weird idea.

We both live in a country that continues to practice a form of government that gave us centuries of slavery and genocide. In fact, I’m a registered member of a political party founded by slave owners!

That said, modern Democrats don’t generally support slavery. Most socialists I know don’t support the gulags etc, and socialists generally consider Stalin and Mao to have betrayed the ideals of socialism. (You’ve probably read Orwell on this topic.) Curtis Yarvin, on the other hand, is personally in favor of slavery. Not “supports a belief system which gives us,” none of that abstract indirect guff. He’s personally in favor of the institution, capable of looking undisguised Slave Power straight in the eye and inviting it to work for him.

I am confident that Bernie Sanders would not establish gulags. I do not have the same confidence about those who say he isn't a real soicialist.
