Anything about language by Prof. McWhorter is worth reading. If your library has Great Courses CDs, see if you can find his THE STORY OF HUMAN LANGUAGE. It's among the most interesting lecture serieses I've ever heard.

+1, because I was about to post pretty much the same thing. I also listened to his introduction to linguistics course, which I didn't retain as much of, but nevertheless found interesting.

His "Language A to Z" set is more scattershot, but enjoyable.

I am reminded of this whenever I have to tutor someone. English is completely stupid.
