I might feel this way even if I could hear
Why phones don't work

For Backgound: About five years ago the audiology tech (who had accurately gagued my background & sense of humor) came out with the strip of graphs from my test, and wrote on my clipboard "You are hereby Officially Pronounced 'Deaf as a Fencepost'. I'll write 'Profoundly Deaf' on the paperwork, but the fencepost thing is at least as accurate."

Last week, in the Assisted Living Home where I was making arrangements (*sigh*) the young person in stylish scrubs at the desk (the opportunity to ask "what pronoun do you prefer?" hasn't yet arisen, but I'll take a stab at "she/her") scorned my clipboard, took out her mobile telephone thingie, talked into it, and showed me the screen -- on which her words appeared in the form of text. The Official which whom I had the appointment then appeared, but afterwards I sidled up to her with carefully-calculated ostentatious unobtrusiveness and she pulled it out again, explaining details & pros and cons (loud background noise can be a problem, occasional wrong words, difficulty with strong foriegn accents... all trivial, IMHO). And I'm pretty sure it can capture this dictated text and transmit it as e-mail.

The coming four months will be devoted to the hassle & trauma of disposing of the Stuph (including well over 10,000 books) I've accumulated over the past 80+ years, but my next Project after that is obvious. (I'm not sure if I'll hunt up a Spy Shop to get a directional microphone to enable being somewhat less obtrusive, but it's an option for investigation.)

If you're headed for the "Profoundly Deaf" category, you have my condolences, of course, but also my suggestion that, actually, you're doing it at a much better time than any in the past.

That's great about the text display, Don, but it proves the point of the article: current devices are great for texting, but terrible as telephones. (supergee's assumption is correct, also: I can hear just fine, but I hate what's happened to telephones.)

I still hear well enough for face to face conversation, but am useless on the phone.
