Pope Frankenstein
One of my favorite historical figures is Gerbert d'Aurillac, who may have been the most scientific pope until now. How much of his reputation for being a sorcerer comes from his interest in mathematics is still subject to debate. I also recommend Ars Magica, Judith Tarr's excellent novel about him.

He was an amazing man who accomplished a great many things. Somewhere on a library shelf at home I have a copy of The Peasant Boy Who Became Pope. A downright inspirational book for a young Catholic boy.
