Secret benevolence
Funding a birth control revolution
He thinks that unless women can control their fertility—and that it’s basically their right to control their fertility—that you are sort of wasting more than half of the brainpower in the United States.

I recall an essay by Isaac Asimov about the one thing he'd change in humans: he'd change women's bodies so they would be able to choose whether to be fertile, rather than needing medical intervention to inhibit their fertility.

I'd take it the additional step Samuel R. Delany did: If two people want their sex to create a baby, they both take pills.

Yes, that's better. Both parents should consciously decide.

Man, I love my IUD. Mind you, I'm 53, and the chances of me getting pregnant are, um, vanishingly small. My most recent IUD was implanted two years ago. My very nice, very young, male gyno said, very seriously, "Are you using this primarily as birth control?" "Yes." "You do realize that the chance of a live birth over the age of 50 is less than 5%?" "Yes, but those pregnancies without live births also sound like no fun at all." "All right, then."

I've always been a bit tender in the cervix, and this was a particularly painful implantation. Between cuss words, I asked, "Is it usual for it to hurt more as you get older?" My very nice, very young gyno said, "Well, frankly not many women over 50 get an IUD." "How did I get so old?" I demanded. "I'm pretty sure you did it one day at a time." I laughed. Then I cussed some more, because damn, that hurt.

But, it's effective. And it's not dependent upon my sketchy memory, my inability to do something on a daily basis, or my partner. IUDs are wonderful, wonderful, wonderful.

I guess I like Warren Buffet a whole lot more than I used to. And I never disliked him much. Really, these things are a godsend for women. The fact that the one I have also made my periods go away is an additional blessing.
