Scarlet
20 years ago Jeb Bush, in an ecstasy of slut shaming, pointed to The Scarlet Letter as an example of how well America used to do these things. Amanda Marcotte points out that he got it wrong. Fortunately, that challenging classic of Required Reading has now been translated into terms even a Republican can understand.

Thanx to Pandagon.

Marcotte says, "say what you will, but the hypocritical Puritans that condemn Hester aren’t exactly fucking heroes in that book." What's amazing is that Bush isn't even claiming that they are. In the quote, he just says that the plot is a reminder that "public condemnation of irresponsible sexual behavior has strong historical roots." This is true, it does. What Hawthorne thought about it (or, say, his deep shame at being descended from one of the Salem Witch Trial judges) doesn't matter to old Jeb. Bring back the condemnation no matter what the societal costs, because Virtue.
