We are also trained / socialized into this. Some years ago I went to an in-house training course on "Problem Solving" (except that it turned out to be explicitly group problem solving) . The whole aim was to show that by pooling our skills we could do better than we could individually. Except I broke the course: I had better personal scores than any group (including the ones I was put into). Not surprisingly, the course instructor did not encourage me to take away the moral that in general my strategy should be to ignore everybody else and proceed on the basis that I was probably right.
