Today's crankiness
The Web is full of cartoonists who should have competent people draw for them, just as Leonard Cohen's songs should be sung by actual singers, and someone should novelize Frank Herbert.

Along the same lines, I've been wondering for weeks how much better I would like Bruce Springsteen (and his fans) if he had ever hired someone who could sing to perform with his band.

For Leonard Cohen, read also, and even more emphatically, Bob Dylan.

There are a few newspaper comic strips whose original artists hired someone else to draw for them, but I recall that I often preferred the original artist.

I blame Dylan for Cohen: He wrote it, you gotta let him sing it. Bad idea.

Frank Herbert was just fine until he found himself knee-deep in money cranking out sausage.

I disagree. I thought Destination: Void and The Eyes of Heisenberg should have been turned over to a prose stylist, while I manfully slogged through Dune.
