Not that it ever was that good
Charles Pierce on the New Republic mess.

ETA: The Times Book Review (paywall) notes that there has just been an anthology of the best from The New Republic. Kind of like that poor bastard who just published a big bio of Bill Cosby and decided not to bring readers down with all that unsubstantiated rape stuff. The review reminds us that The New Republic published an "Idiocy Watch," pointing with derision at those who had noticed that our 2003 Iraq adventure would be a pointless disaster.

I was disappointed the Pierce left out Lee Seigel, the embarrassing "original blogger" who compared anti war protesters and daily show fans to nazis, then was caught using a sock puppet to defend his ugly views. After he was dimissed, the new republic deleted all of his posts and comments and just how idiotic he was disappeared down the memory hole.

According to his Wikipedia article, he was back at TNR a year later, and has written several books. Ugh.

.. but never despair / the spirit of The New Republic lives on over at The Weekly Standard , with Fred Barnes, former Mondale staffer Charles Krauthammer, and Bill Kristol (once known as "Dan Quayle's brain" .. or was it Midge Decter's penis?)
