Funny thing is, Hambrick's thesis is more or less what I presumed the 10,000 hours meme meant in the first place: that is, that practice is necessary for greatness, but not sufficient. (Remind me to keep not reading Malcolm Gladwell, though.)

It's also what I'd assumed it would be - I couldn't imagine anyone saying that J. Random Chessplayer would become a grandmaster by investing 10,000 hours. At least you first must assume better than average chess potential.
