Everything is broken.

Thanx to Making Light.

Well, that's a nice way to start the day. ;-) Seriously, though, back in the mid-90s I remember reading an article in Wired by David Brin about the impossibility of privacy and since then I've taken a sort of perverse comfort in my insignificance in the grand scheme of things and the ocean of data that my data's drowning in. I take whatever precautions I feel are reasonable and then let the rest go. Since the alternative seems to be paranoia and constant worry, it works for me.

"Even your computer is kind of more than one computer, boxes within boxes, and each one of those computers is full of little programs trying to coordinate their actions and talk to each other. Computers have gotten incredibly complex, "

And this is recent, because on my first DOS computer I knew literally what every file on the computer was and what it was for.

"Now imagine billions of little unknowable boxes within boxes constantly trying to talk and coordinate tasks at around the same time, sharing bits of data and passing commands around from the smallest little program to something huge, like a browser "

So, the good news is we've already achieved artificial intelligence. The bad news is it's only human intelligence. 'Cause that sure sounds like human civilization.
