Trying to figure out gender

I had a not altogether pleasant conversation elsenet with a native speaker of Hungarian, which does not have gendered pronouns. He was offended by the excessively (in his opinion) "political" tone of the novel, created by Breq's choice of feminine rather than masculine pronouns. Or the author's choice of feminine pronouns to represent the neutral pronouns in Breq's head.

Seemed to me that what was excessively political was the assumption that the masculine is the default by someone who didn't even grow up with a language that forced this conclusion into his thought processes.
