Lingua Franca looks at the tabu against beginning a sentence with "but" or "and." I do it myself, and I defend it with an argument from near-divine authority: The Authorized Version of the Bible does it all the time. Good enough for the King James Gang, good enough for me.

Somewhere around sixth grade, I fulfilled a creative writing assignment in school by writing a Biblical pastiche, which I accomplished largely by beginning a great many sentences with "But" or "And". Admittedly, my skills at pastiche were probably quite poor at that point, but it was nevertheless irritating to get marked off for bad grammar.
