Charlie Stross says justice is a religion. I think he's got something there. Primates appear to like fairness. We symbol-using primates often figure out ways to make that come out right (e.g., fairness for people of our color). Fundamentalists of this particular faith, as Robert Nozick pointed out, are as eager to regulate financial relations between consenting adults as the more traditional sort of fundamentalists are to regulate sexual ones. It does give one to think.

I'm surprised to see Charlie being blindly ethnocentric.
Some answers to "how do we live?" come from the sky (Shari'a, Torah); some come from a bunch of guys sitting around (" establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defence, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty"); but regardless, the rules/principles will need ongoing interpretation for new circumstances or cases.
That common need for interpretive scholars does not make all of them religions.
