There's lots and lots of great stuff here, but I must confess that when I read the description of "The Steam-Grommet Factory", my first thought was, "Oh, like Rendezvous With Rama."

Rendezvous With Rama was a precursor of the Star Wars movies: "Great scenery. Pity the actors get in the way."

I'm allergic to the Turkey City Lexicon, but I'm sure it will be useful to those not so afflicted.

Glad to hear it's not just me. There's a lot of axe-grinding under the surface of this document. It was visible to me in 1984 and it's visible now.

In particular, Joanna Russ deserved better than to be the subject of the cheap shot taken in this endlessly-reprinted document. Generally speaking, the nastiness displayed by the Texas/cyberpunk crowd toward the feminist SF writers whose prominence preceded theirs by just a few years...was not their finest hour.

Many of the Turkey City people went on to do excellent work, a remarkable amount of which violates the witty and snarky rules laid down here.

Yikes, I had to Google "Turkey City Lexicon Joanna Russ" to figure this out. I have read "Souls," but the description in the Lexicon was so wide of the mark that I failed to realize they were taking (very ill-informed) potshots at Russ.

Heretofore I just disliked their tone and their, um, reinvention of the wheel where useful terminology was concerned. And their perhaps excessive relishing of down and dirty, hairy-knuckled, table-pounding critique.
