My mother told me I shouldn't laugh at people like this
* Tom Coburn says there's no such thing as a debt ceiling.

* Pat Robertson says Atkins diet violates God's laws

* Michele Bachmann says that Obama is funding al-Qaeda and it's a sign of the End Times

ETA: Perhaps Robertson is literally demented by now, and it would be best for all concerned if they put him in a nice comfy place with no microphones, like they did with Billy Graham.

Your mother was wrong. You need to laugh at people like that.

There's a part of me that thinks if I were a decent human being, I wouldn't post half the things I do, but goddamn, it's good to not be a decent human being!

I am reminded of Bertrand Russell's pronouncement, "Nice people are those who have nasty minds." By that criterion, I'm glad I'm not a nice person.

Debt Ceiling
Constitutionally speaking, there really is no such thing as "the debt ceiling", you know. Because Congress can't just decide not to pay its bills.

Except that conservatives decided to put this little thing in that they have to affirm that they're going to pay their bills. And for a long time it functioned as just a formality (Stephanie Kelton likens this to clicking "Yes" when a dialog box asks you if you really want to do the thing you just asked it to do). And it's quite possible that they were planning for a day when they could get away with refusing to pay the bills.

And Obama gave it to them.

If there's no such thing as a debt ceiling, then why are Republicans threatening yet another meaningless showdown over it?

Too many on the far right went off the deep end years ago. That's not unusual for extremists of any stripe. The major difference today is the dominance of the conservative news media. They enable psychotics. They enable people to vote for psychotics.

The American people tend to be smarter than their extremists, but not all the time and not always in time.
