I don't really consider myself a birder, even though I do have very nice binoculars. But I'm good friends with an ornithologist and judging by what I've heard from her, the comparison is spot on.

I'm not convinced that SF fandom is "gray" because Worldcon attendees are on average older. Worldcon attendees are people who can afford the expense, and income tends to rise with age; so they're not necessarily representative of local/regional fan demographics.

Also, there's no reason to go to Worldcon except that it's historically important.

And "it's a part of history" isn't actually a selling point for people who are totally comfortable with it being a part of history.

Yeah, I think that might be the point the author was making -- that there should be more effort put into making Worldcon something more attractive and relevant than just "historically important".
