Moon landing
On this date in 1969, we took a great leap for mankind. And then we punked out. If I believed in collective guilt, I would say that we as a species deserve to be imprisoned in an environment until we inevitably die of it.

I don't believe we "punked out" as a species. On the timeline where Jimmy Carter was re-elected, I imagine we have a moon base, and a Mars mission and a lot of other projects. Reagan and the neo-conservative aftermath made it economically impossible. We're beginning to see private enterprise space projects, but it's too soon to tell where that will go. I hope we have enough time.

It was Nixon who killed the moon program. We'd gotten there on his watch, the Russians were no longer a threat, game over. It would have been tremendously difficult even under President Not-Reagan to have ramped it so far back up again without JFK's national security as an impetus.
