Mandatory Jollity
Good cheer can be one of the more onerous requirements of work. And of course it’s worse for women.

No, y'know what? One of the more onerous requirements of work is putting up with bad cheer: grouchiness, rudeness, bitchyness, moodiness, sarcasm, gossip, back-biting, whining, repining, DrahMah and passive-aggressive bullshit.

Yes, you have to smile at your co-workers, clients, patients, students, customers AND pathetic minimum-wage minions. Yes, you have to greet them civilly, listen to them courteously, speak to them graciously, and bite your fucking tongue on all the things you COULD say, but which are better not said. This is the basic standard of professional behavior.

And yes, it's true that men get away with violating it more easily than women do. These men are known as 'assholes', and the fact that they do get away with violating it makes for a lot of workplace toxicity and unproductivity. But plenty of women violate it too. Hello dearies, you're at work, not back in middle school - save your unseemly emotions for your friends, your lover, your Mom or your shrink; don't be inflicting them on people who're just trying to do their jobs.
