Reburying the undead
World Fantasy Con realizes that Lovecraft doesn’t belong on the nominee pins either.

When will the book burnings start?

Never. Deciding not to especially honor someone is not the same as censorship. Or is that too hard to figure out?

Absolutely. They will have to toast their marshmallows elsewhere,

This crosses over "deciding not to honor someone". The PC consensus is that he's EVIL...so what's the next obvious step? or is THAT to hard to figure out?

My mind doesn't work like that. Does yours?

Forgive my outburst. I was reacting to the condescending tone of that reply.

My mind understands that people DO behave in that way, like it or not.

My take would be that the condescension would begin with the person who considered rendering a controversial pin obsolete as the inevitable fore-runner of book-burning, and deserves a reply in the same spirit. But, whatever.

Seriously, though: would you care to provide concrete references to persons in the WFC community considering Lovecraft as EVIL? Especially in such a way as to justify such an all-caps description?

Because my reading of the original controversy over the award bust/statuette was that the objectors were at pains to point out that they did not object to Lovecraft in print, or even to appreciating his positive qualities as a writer or noting his influence on the field. They just considered him too flawed a person to stand as an emblem for the fantasy field.

If you're seriously interested, and not just here to drip scorn as you began, I could attempt to locate such statements; I'd begin by looking for links in the archives of Jim Hines' LJ.

Sofia Samatar said that she made Lovecraft required reading.

These are the pins given out to each nominee for a World Fantasy Award? They were designed by Gahan Wilson and depicted Lovecraft?

Yes, those
