Detroit's "megaregion" even crosses the international border. I have co-workers who live in Windsor, Ontario, but work in Detroit.

There's currently a proposal in Michigan to allow tax incentives for businesses near the state line based on the number of employees not only in Michigan but in the Ohio counties bordering Michigan, since people often do live in one state and work in the other. I'd appreciate the reasoning except that I consider tax incentives a scam for enriching businesses without any guarantees that they'll create new jobs or benefit the local economy.
