Amazon has just discovered that giving people free stuff in return for product reviews somehow leads to biased reviews unless of course it is done through Amazon’s own program.

Thanx to Metafilter

I do think this is legit, though.

The problem with incentivized reviews is that there's a strong chance that if you give out a negative review or five, you'll stop getting free stuff.

But with Amazon acting as middleman, they can avoid punishing negative reviews and rewarding positive ones, instead, inviting people to be "Vine" reviewers based on reviewer rank (ie, overall review helpfullness, near as I can tell).

Of course, there are other middlemen; but I can see how Amazon doesn't want to be in the business of determining whether a given middleman is or isn't acting as a neutral party rather than an agent for one side or another.
