I kinda think First Wave Feminism involved female poets from the island of Lesbos, in mumblety-mumble B.C.. My first exposure seems to have been c. 1958, when Bjo Wells (later Trimble) pointed out that female fans needed to be about twice as good as male ones in order to be considered worthy of approbation.

A few years later Avendon Carol (sitting in the hallway in front of the (first?) Room of Our Own (hosted by Susan Wood, IIRC, at a WesterCon , because she couldn't smoke in it, and I couldn't enter without a female sponsor [and yeah, I certainly did point out that this was the first overt sexual discrimination I had observed in the more-than-a-decade I'd been in fandom] was my Mentor, and impressed me enormously by (figuratively & often literally speaking) quoting names, dates, and numbers that could be verified (yes, I'm saying that she's a Nerd, and knows how to talk to the rest of us; I hope that doesn't bother anyone). I think of her as being exemplary of second-stage fannish feminism, and of Jeanne Gomoll as the person to whom I owe much for her presentation of third-stage feminism.

But hey, Avedon and Jeanne are both still active, and... err... I guess I'm not sufficiently Fussy or Meta to want to try to distingush between 20-year conventional Generations, and c. 6-year fannish ones. It's enough for me that Feminism, and other forms of human Identification are progressing, year by year.

N.B. Dreamwidth apparently is too Advanced to accept a comment from my antique software, so I'll try here (although LiveJournal is also getting pretty snotty).

It's kind of self-referential or recursive or something that idiomatic-dicks can't tell the difference between not liking literal-dicks and not liking idiomatic-dicks.
I'm trying to think of a feminist I've known who was anti-sex and failing.
