Alien symbols
The Newspaper of Record cannot deal with last names that have spaces in them. Of course, it's not them; it's the computer people. Did anyone write a viciously satirical sf story in which many futuristic systems would replace the simple apostrophe with one of a dozen bits of gibberish that look like the ways comic strips represented Bad Words?

Thanx to Making Light.

I do recall The Man Whose Name Didn't Fit, a science fiction novel I read back in high school, which began with a man losing his job because his hyphenated last name was too long to fit in the new computer system's Last Name field.

I read that too. As I recall, it did not live up to its premise.

I recall that it was generally anti-computer -- the Man Whose Name Wouldn't Fit [just searched for the book, and I'd had the name slightly wrong] and his friends released something that ate all the computer systems. The premise, I guess, was that we'd all be better off without systems that force us to conform. I wouldn't go quite that far, myself.

I have ended up using only the last part of my surname as most systems can't cope with a three part surname with no hyphens...

Most of the time I don't get to use both of my middle initials because most systems cannot cope with more than one middle name.
