An honor student in Texas was jailed for missing too much school.

"But the judge said Tran's case was bigger than the individual situation of one student.

"'If you let one run loose, what are you gonna' do with the rest of 'em?,' said Judge Lanny Moriarty. 'Let them go too?'"

Maybe the Texas schools need a work-release program.

The real crime here is that a 17-year-old girl has to work two jobs and is solely responsible for her younger siblings. "The system has failed her" is an understatement.

That too.

It sounds like she has an older and a younger sibling, one at university and one with relatives--she earns money to help support them both and herself. It's rather awful but she seemed to be managing, even in this economy. I don't know what would have happened if she'd actually had custody of younger children, or if she'd lost her jobs from having to go to jail. It's just appalling. Her parents should be the ones being punished.

Someone should set up a scholarship fund for her like they did for the little boy who made the cardboard arcade. (Which was awesome, both the fund and the arcade.)

Texas judges seem to be unaware that the purpose of HAVING judges is to be able to look at each individual case individually and tailor judgments to the individual situations.
