Thanks--very nice article. I'm pleased and amazed to see fannish stuff getting respectful reportining in the mainstream media.

One nitpick: I'm pretty sure that shipping refers to fans who worship particular characters and write stories putting those characters in the best light possible.

Not that I read scads of fan fiction, but I've always seen "shipper" used in the relationship context. The fans who wanted Mulder and Scully to get horizontal in "The X-Files" were notorious shippers.

I have been known to read scads of fanfic, though I haven't been doing so lately, and shippers are definitely relationship-promoters anytime I've seen the term.
